Pinterest.com is a fun and inspiring way to collect many ideas for many different reasons. Getting addicted to this website is very easy. As you browse through the different pages of photos, you find yourself getting lost in the Pinterest world. This website is not only a fun way to see all the different images that are out there but it has become a sensation for the wedding world. This new and fun website is a great tool to get inspired for your wedding day. Not only does it allow you to design your own pinboard but it allows others to comment on the images you have selected.

The idea of Pinterest began in December 2009 by a group of successful entrepreneurs and investors. This invitation-only site officially launched in March 2010. Pinterest’s mission and goals are based on the idea of connecting everyone in the world to “things” they find interesting. This new website allows users to organize and share all the things they find interesting on the web.

These pinboards can also be used for collecting ideas for decorating your home, finding your fashion style or saving favorite recipes. Users also have the option to browse pinboards created by other people. This is a great way to discover new things and get inspired by people who share common interests.

How the website works is users pin an image to Pinterest. A pin can be added from a website using the “Pin It” button or you can upload an image from your computer. When adding a new pin using the “Pin It” button, it links the image back to the site it came from giving the image its proper photo credit. Pinterest stays current with technology and social media and has recently added the “Pin It” button to the iPhone and Google Chrome.

This new website is gaining popularity with many people around the world and it also gives those fun collage exercises we used to do in school a new modern twist. For you, this new website is a great way to get ideas for your colors and themes. Pinterest is linked to any social media site, giving others the chance to comment and view your images.

In August 2011, Time magazine listed Pinterest in its “50 Best Websites of 2011” article. Additionally, TechCrunch named Pinterest the Best New Start up of 2011 due to its referral traffic to retailers. As of January 2012, this unique website had reported 11.7 million users, making this new website one of the fastest growing in popularity. So play around with Pinterest and see what exciting ideas and leads you can find!

Planning your big day!

After saying “Yes” to the man of your dreams, it’s time to begin planning for your big day! Every little detail must be perfect and that can become a little overwhelming. I asked some local wedding coordinators to lend some advice to brides and here’s what they had to say.

Karen Berl, RSVP Events, suggests to first choose your theme. Finalizing your colors, themes, and ideas before meeting with any vendors will help bring together the vision of your wedding day. Also, to help brides with these decisions, Karen recommends looking through bridal magazines and to attend several bridal shows to get a variety of ideas.

A main concern when planning your wedding is your budget! Getting a firm grasp of your budget will help guide you throughout the planning process and give you a better idea of where you stand. This in turn will relieve some stress. Libby Woodard, Easton Events, suggests taking advantage of technology. Using Google Docs is a great way to create, revise and edit your budget in excel. This also allows you to share your budget with whoever needs to be informed. She also suggests planning this just like building a new home; you always spend about 10% more than you had planned. Creating a contingency line will help balance this.

There is an ocean full of vendors and narrowing it down to the perfect one for your special occasion can be hard. Dechele, Events by Dechele, suggests asking friends and family who they have used or experienced in the past to gather feedback. Also, another great resource to find vendors is wedding blogs. Interview more than one vendor because the vendor you may have your heart set on may be already booked on your wedding date. When it comes to your final decision, go with your gut instinct. Never feel obligated to select a vendor that a friend or family member had used.

Of course, hiring an event coordinator will help alleviate the stress of planning this huge day and Karen from RSVP Events believes this will be the best investment you will make. They may either have many years of experience or are certified with the proper credentials. They will be able to help brides with their wedding budgets as well as direct the brides to venues and vendors that match the bride’s vision and budget. The most important concern is that the bride and her family enjoy this special day and hiring a professional will ensure that you do.

Planning your wedding includes so many details, ideas, and people wanting to help. It can feel incredibly stressful at times. Michelle Gillespie, Occasions by M&K, advises brides to keep a journal to help keep track of your ideas and visions for your big day. And also, be sure to listen to all suggestions from friends, family and wedding industry professionals.

The important thing to remember is that it’s your special day and that your vision should shine through. Being prepared, educated and opened minded should help planning this large scale event and make it seem effortless. Make sure to take advantage of bridal publications, websites and blogs, online technologies and any other tools that may help to pull everything off. This should be a fun process and involving friends and family will help relieve some of the stress. Keep your vision true to you and your fiancé and your wedding day will be a success!

The last popular trend for 2012 is the most extravagant of weddings where the glitz and glamour is a must. The color scheme for the Hollywood Glam weddings are dark reds, white and black. The sophisticated and sleek look isn’t only for the décor but also for the gown by wearing a form-fitted dress made of luxurious fabrics paired with the perfect stilettos. From the décor to the dress, these weddings are glamorous just like a Hollywood red carpet event.

This week we will give you some ideas on how to create your ‘Fantasy Princess’ wedding for that little girl inside all of us where the pinks and purples rule. We all grew up watching Cinderella and we’ve been waiting for our Prince Charming. The Fantasy Princess wedding incorporates feminine and classic colors such as silver, gold, white, pink, or purple. The décor can be simple or elaborate but will make the event seem elegant and classy by using gems, mirrors and floating candles. Like every Disney movie, the gown is big and puffy most likely with a detailed beading, cap sleeves, or a corset making it the epitome of a girly-girl gown.

That is why most engagements take place around Christmas and New Years. And why most bridal shows take place in January and February. There are some notable shows that are approaching that I’d like to mention. Yes, it is on Super Bowl Sunday, but the hours are Noon-5pm and will get you home before kickoff. Wedding Trends: Part 1

It is the beginning of 2012 which means new trends in the wedding industry. These new popular trends are Vintage Romance, Fantasy Princess, and Hollywood Glam. All three trends give brides an amazing way to express themselves with their individual characteristics.

This week we will give you tips on how to create the Vintage Romance theme at your event. We absolutely love this postmodern vibe that blends the past with present. When thinking of decor try to use fun colors such as ivory, gold and pastels. Stevenson Ridge has seen this trend work with soft pinks and greens. This trend is very popular with DIY decorations using lace and fabrics that match the color scheme. Popular table decor includes burlap and new moss table runners! The wedding gown for this theme is a simple dress with a little touch of lace and a grosgrain sash of your choice of color. Have fun with your accessories and look into grandma's jewelry box for something with an antique feel!

This summer has been weddings galore at Stevenson Ridge! We are getting ready for October to be a whirlwind of DJs, great food, and beautiful photography for our events. With weddings at The Lodge and Riddick House, there is never a dull moment.

In other news, we have recently started carrying Stevenson Ridge pottery mugs and notecards (pictured above) that are available for purchase at The Lodge. A special thanks to our vendors. We are excited about the new custom merchandise.

Chamber After Hours

With 200 people attending the event, we met a lot of great new faces while listening to bluegrass and enjoying cranberry and peach bellinis. Events at The Lodge

Our first wedding kicked off at The Lodge on May 14 and we have been hosting weddings, cocktail hours, and non profit events ever since. Many of our attendees did not know about Stevenson Ridge, so we have loved giving tours of the property and sharing the unique history of the buildings. With the completion of The Lodge, we look forward to celebrating weddings in our new special events facility as well as the Riddick House. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the Lodge with an open house immediately following. Stevenson Ridge Bloomed for Historic Garden Day

The Rappahannock Valley Garden Club had a successful turn-out for the "Crossroads of Spotsylvania" tour held on Tuesday. We were amazed that over 600 tourists visited Stevenson Ridge coming from as far as Kentucky and Georgia. Flowers were showcased in the Riddick House, Servants Quarters, and Spy Hill House. We would like to thank the hostesses for sharing the history of our antique homes. It was a lot of fun seeing others take an interest in our historic preservation.

On April 19th the Virginia wide garden show is coming to historic Fredericksburg. This year Stevenson Ridge will be on the map as one of the stops for exhibits. Come by to enjoy the beauty of our 87 acre property and take in the horticulture exhibits in the Servants Quarters and the Spy Hill House. The Riddick House, which was originally built in 1812 and restored in 2006 to its original condition, will be decorated by the Garden Club. Wedding Planning 101

Weddings are a once in a lifetime event (hopefully!) and therefore can get pretty expensive. Having planned my own wedding last year on a budget, I thought I would pass along some tips I learned... some on how to save money and others on how to make the day a memorable and successful one.

1. SET A BUDGET AND STICK TO IT... Figure out what you can afford, who will be chipping in and don't be shy about letting your vendors know your budget. The worst you should hear is that the vendor cannot work within your budget and then should offer advice on where or whom you should look into.

2. PICK 1 OR 2 THINGS THAT ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU AND INVEST... To me, the food and entertainment were most important. Therefore I spent a good chunk of my budget on those two things and wasn't so picky on all the rest. To others, your pictures or wedding video may be most important, so you will want to invest in quality vendors in those areas.

3. DOUBLE DUTY... Do you like the idea of giving out favors but can't find it in your budget to give out gifts at your own wedding? Find items to double as favors such as picture frames that are placecard holders, custom wine or martini glasses that can be used as bar glassware or small wildflower arrangements in an assortment of antique vases that decorate the tables.

4. TO INVITE OR NOT TO INVITE... I read up on a lot of etiquette books regarding the proper invitation rules. What I learned is that it is completely OKAY to not include "and Guest". You should definitely invite the significant other of your guest if they are living together, have been dating six or more months, or are considered serious. I just recommend sitting the single guests together so they do not feel lonely or out-of-place.

5. HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER... For those of us who are not experienced in the art of event planning and don't know where to begin, then do yourself a huge favor and hire a wedding planner. You will more than make up your cost through preventing contract mistakes, avoiding inexperienced vendors, receiving money-saving tips/expertise and most importantly, keeping your sanity! If you are excited about planning your entire wedding but want to relax on your special day, then a Day-of Coordinator is perfect for you.

PAII Innkeeping Conference

PAII hosted their annual Innkeeping Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, last week. As new innkeepers, we were excited to attend. We spent 3 days networking with other innkeepers, vendors and industry professionals. Debbie and I attended the trade show and did a little shopping! It was a learning experience for me and I plan to implement some of the great ideas that were shared. Not only was the conference a success, we were able to enjoy the beautiful city of Charleston. Charleston is known for its spectacular restaurants. The Oak is one of our favorite restaurants and it wouldn't be a Charleston vacation without stopping by! Debbie swears by the Oysters Rockefeller but I'm partial to the Scallops. On Tuesday evening, I had the pleasure of joining a few other innkeepers for dinner at Anson Restaurant. I would have given my first born or more realistically my movie collection (which I adore!) for the Key Lime Pie they served! I debated getting a second helping to take home, but knowing that I would probably eat it in bed later that evening I stopped myself. All in all, it was a great week and you will more than likely see its influence on your next trip to Stevenson Ridge.

Corporate Meeting

Have you ever needed to host an out of the office meeting? You look and look for a place, your group is small, eight to twelve people; the meeting needs to take most of the day and all the places that offer meeting spaces are too large or too cold. Why not take advantage of this dining room table at Stevenson Ridge's Riddick House. Our dining/conference table seats 12 with a wood burning fire place at the head of the table. How nice to have history all around you while planning and working toward the future. Yesterday we hosted such a meeting in this 1812 Plantation home, furnished in antiques dating back to the 1500's. This meeting included breakfast from Kolache House Bakery, serving authentic Czech pastries; we also provided croissants with homemade preserves and fresh fruit. We provided beverages and clean-up throughout the day: beginning with Coffee, Hot Tea, Orange Juice, and Milk; then followed with bottled water, soda, and Lemonade. Our Tuesday group decided to break up the day and take advantage of a close by local charm, the Courthouse Cafe located near the Spotsylvania Courthouse. We do however love to work with our groups and help make the lunch arrangements so that you would not have to leave the property unless desired. So next time you have the need for a weekday social/meeting spot, consider us.

Wedding Coordinator

Recently, we began requiring that wedding reception events must have a Day-Of Coordinator. We were blessed to have such a successful first wedding season... typically May-October. We worked with a variety of clients who had such different expectations and visions for their "perfect day". One thing remained constant however and that is that the weddings with coordinators run much more smoothly than those without. If you aren't in the wedding business, it is nearly impossible to anticipate those things that can, and do, go wrong. Whether it's running out of ice, forgetting the garter or a cake topper that has gone missing... coordinators will ease your worries and take care of these things without you even having to know about it. My wedding was less than a month ago and I don't know what I would have done without my wedding coordinator (and angel), Whitney. She ran around breathlessly through the evening making sure that I didn't have to know that we ran out of beef, that my tables had to be re-arranged and that the police paid us a visit for being a wee-bit too loud. I assumed the night went on without a hitch, and so I was one happy blushing bride.

I cannot stress enough the importance of having a coordinator for at least the day-of your wedding. You and your parents want to enjoy the day without having to run around and be liason between all of your vendors. The tasks that coordinators do can be suited to fit your personal needs. Common tasks that get overlooked: lighting all of the candles (it takes longer than you think), decorating your outdoor ceremony site, setting up the seating card table, making sure your DJ plays all of the songs you have requested, bringing your gifts to the correct car at the end of the night, giving final payments and gratuities to your vendors, calling taxis for your guests that can't drive home... and the list just goes on. Ask anyone who has hired a coordinator for their wedding, and most likely you will get "I couldn't have done it without her!".

New Construction

The newest addition to Stevenson Ridge is going to be our main Events Facility "The Lodge". Estimated to be completed in early Spring of 2011, the building will accommodate up to 200 guests. The Lodge keeps with Stevenson Ridge's concept of Restored Antique Homes; it will contain a salvaged 150 year old former Canadian Church. The salvaged Church will be intergrated into the new consturction so that the hand-hewn antique post & beam frame as well as the 25' cathedral ceiling will all be visible while attending events in the structure. There will be many modern additions to the antique structure one of which is a gas fire place at the head of where the original aisle would have ended. Just imagine where a couple would have been married 150 years ago, now will sit the ambiance and glow of warm fire light. Many new relationships can be commemorated in this perfect blending of the old and the new; the hope will be that all unions in this facility will blend as well.
